We recently concluded a three week trip across Europe. Started from London and travelled all the way to Spain, touching multiple cities. Of course, given our immense love for food, we spent the most number of days in Italy. And when in Italy - you can't miss the superb gelatos on offer from multiple shops in each city. A gelato differs from an ice cream in that it is made with milk and not cream so is definitely lighter - means you can have a lottt !
We even had good gelato in other cities like Amsterdam and Barcelona.
We went there with great anticipation having heard so much about how awesome it tastes and how much you relish it in the hot Italian sun. We weren't disappointed even a touch and had some really interesting flavours like Vanilla with bourbon and pistachio with mint, and the omnipresent - stracciatella - the gelato version of cookies and cream.
Also, we learnt that a good way to pick a nice gelataria (apart from googling) is to follow the crowds. People seem to know their gelato. Another tip is to ensure that the Gelato is not too shiny on the surface - that indicates added colours and artificial flavours - a complete no no.
We probably ate from many shops (almost one daily) but the top three in our mind were:
- Grom, Florence
- Old Bridge, Rome (near Vatican City)
- Amorino, Barcelona
Can't wait for some of the good Gelato chains like Amorino to open in India. Sigh!
